Hernani Public School is a small school situated 95km north-east of Armidale, 105km south-west of Grafton and 115km west of Coffs Harbour. The school services a rural environment drawing its students from farming properties in the Hernani area. All students travel to school by private vehicle. Hernani Public School provides a wide range of educational experiences catering to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students. A strong focus of the school is the appreciation and utilization of small class sizes in meeting the needs of individuals and abilities. The school is able to do this by utilizing funds and teacher allocation from the Priority School's Program. The school focuses on a range of programs and activities that aim at improving literacy and numeracy outcomes for all studnents. There is a strong technology culture within the school with all lessons incorporating interactive techniques. The school also provides special inniatives to ehance all aspects of school life. These programs include: Cineliteracy, where the students engage in film making in many different forms including animation to tell a story or make a point about an issue; Active After School Community sports initiative where parents are accrediated to deliver lessons with a focus on fundamental movemnet skills, participation of all students and enjoyment; Playgoup at School which focuses on peer support within a gross motor context for pre-school children in the area; Shared rich learning tasks in mathematics which focuses on peer support within the K-6 context and problem solving in numeracy; Live Life Well at School program which is a long term initiative that aims to get more children more active more often, as well as focusing on healthy eating habits.
