The Fremantle Language Development Centre (FLDC) is a school for children who have been diagnosed with a severe speech and language impairment. It provides specialised speech, language and academic intervention on an individual and small group basis for students from Kindergarten to Year 3. Students are referred to the school through a process that is co-ordinated by the Fremantle Education District Office. Both a speech pathology assessment and a psychological assessment are required as well as a teacher questionnaire where appropriate. All accepted children need to meet the following referral criteria: * A significant primary language disability in one or more areas of language * Demonstrated evidence of non-verbal learning potential within the average or above average range as measured by a standardised cognitive assessment * Demonstrated evidence of sound adaptive behaviour skills The placement committee profile the information and make offers to students who meet entrance criteria. The duration of attendance depends on each individual child, the progress made and the appropriateness of placement. Every student is reviewed on a continuing basis and parents are kept fully informed and participate in all decisions. When a student exits the FLDC, a comprehensive and supportive transition process is implemented to support students, parents and the receiving schools. The FLDC supports district schools through close collaboration with the Statewide Speech and Language Service. FLDC staff provides professional learning, work shadow opportunities and the sharing of resources and expertise with mainstream schools in order to support students to further develop their speech and language skills. Staff members are specially trained in all areas of speech and language impairment on site and work within a collaborative model of service that includes teachers, speech pathologists, school psychologists, specialist language support teachers, sensory motor specialists and education assistants.
