Harwood Island Public School: the small school that gives students big experiences in a caring and encouraging environment. Harwood Island Public School is a small rural school in the village of Harwood Island on the Clarence River. With a drawing area taking in Harwood Island as well as Ashby and Tullymorgan, the school encompasses a diverse community. The school strives for the highest levels of quality teaching and learning in all Key Learning Areas. The school has Literacy and Numeracy improvement programs which cater for the individual growth of all students. The strong Student Welfare programs lead to confident children. The school focuses on rewarding positive behaviour and bullying is not tolerated within the school community. Every classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and mini computer lab. Technology is used as a tool to improve learning and increase the level of engagement for all students. Every child has their own webpage, into which they store their work from all Key Learning Areas. This webpage is available via the school's network throughout the school and allows for enormous flexibility within the teaching programs. The school is also involved in Cineliteracy, which involves the senior students producing a movie every year. This is a major project which encompasses writing, reading, drama, talking and listening, creative art and technology. Over the past five years the school has won numerous awards at the Big River Public Schools' Film Festival. We also focus on Dance and the school participates in local eisteddfods. Every class participates in dancing and the school has been awarded a number of awards at both the Lower Clarence and Grafton Eisteddfods. The school has an excursion policy which provides all students with a wide range of experiences. The excursions work on a three year cycle and include an outdoor education experience, a Sydney experience and a Snow/Canberra Experience.
