Marian Catholic College is a living faith community of students, parents, staff and pastors that explicitly witnesses Catholic beliefs and traditions. It is a learning community valuing interdependent core activities of learning and teaching. The College community promotes access to new skills, knowledge, attitudes and values to maximise learning potential. The school motto, Walk with Christ, represents our journey through school and life—where we all walk with Christ. The 2009 School Certificate and Higher School Certificate results were strong with a majority of students in the top three bands with 66% above state average and 14% achieving an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) above 90. This was fostered by the ‘high warmth and high limit’ approach to teaching and learning. In the School Certificate Computing Skills assessment for 2009, 84% of the cohort achieved in the top band (Highly Competent). Wide spread access in both PC and Mac platforms enable effective integration of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) across the curriculum, contributing to this result. In National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2010, literacy and numeracy achievement in the top two bands for Years 7 and 9 were above state and national benchmarks. The primary objective of the school Literacy Policy is aimed at providing assistance to teachers, to improve student literacy outcomes, and focuses on students requiring mastery of literacy skills. NAPLAN testing identifies students in greatest need of assistance. The focus in 2009–10 has been on boys’ and cross-curricula literacy and the improvement of writing skills. Numeracy is developed by a range of programs including Mathletics, Maths Drop-in tutorials and wide participation in Numeracy Week. The College curriculum is diverse, balanced and appropriate for a range of abilities, and challenges each student to enjoy learning and to succeed.
