Wagaman Primary School is located in the northern suburbs of Darwin. Wagaman is a culturally diverse learning community with students from a wide range of backgrounds. Approximately 48% of students come from English as a Second Language backgrounds, and approximately 25% of students are Indigenous. A significant percentage of the student population in recent years have been identified as students requiring additional needs or intervention. This demographic had a direct effect on outcomes and underpins the school's acknowledgment of the need for explicit teaching and appropriate intervention. Establishing the foundations for literacy and numeracy is critical and to this end the school has embarked on several early years initiatives such as Early Years Learning Framework and Universal Access (15 hrs preschool)to influence the 0-5 yrs development. Quality programs from Preschool to Year 6 is our goal. To meet the needs of the wide range of students, the school has initiated, developed or participated in a number of innovative educational programs. Programs such as the phonological based E.L.F. and P.A.L. are proving effective in literacy intervention. Likewise Quicksmart and Count Me in Too is aiding our numeracy development. First Steps is our preferred literacy approach and our staff are acknowledged for their explicit teaching in this area. The school actively promotes a sense of community and belonging. Tribes Learning Communities is a process which underpins our positive culture. It blends the fields of co-operative learning, resiliency, learning theory and school change into a meaningful whole. We promote inclusion, respect, growth, learning and active participation by all in a safe and supportive environment.Wagaman Primary School regularly encourages and involves parents and the community in decision making and other celebratory events.
