The school has grown from 815 in 2006 to1130 students in 2011. A cap of 1200 students allows planning to manage student numbers. As a Building Futures school a rebuild is possible in the near future. Koonung has 85 equivalent full time staff, 3.5 Principal class,89 teaching staff and 29 educational support staff. Core curriculum includes sport education at Yr 7 & 8, Chinese, French, and Japanese languages. Electives are offered at Yr 9 & 10 and Yr 10 students are able to access VCE subjects. The school has implented many innovative programs including a High Achievers program at Yr 7 - 10 which is a select entry program extending and enriching academically able students without accelerating them. The Year 9 Live Life program builds life skills & engages students with relevant, challenging and values based units of work. At Yr 8 inquiry is undertaken in the Flexible Learning Centre as a core study. In 2009 a pastoral care program “Connections’ was introduced. This program sees Yr 7 - 10 students meeting with their connections teacher for 20 minutes each day followed by 4 x 70 minute lessons. Yr 10 Science is taught in discrete Physics, Chemistry and Biology blocks on a term rotation where students are exposed to expert teachers. Maths at Yr 7 - 9 has extra staffing enabling allocation of students into ability groups each term.
