Blackburn English Language School is the major provider of the New Arrivals Program in the EMR. It is a primary and secondary school, which provides full time, intensive English courses for newly-arrived migrants and refugees prior to their enrolment in a mainstream school or further education. The school has 2 campuses, one in Burwood East and a second smaller campus in Maroondah. Students are eligible for a 6 month or 12 month program and can commence their program at any time during the school year in order to support the Federal Government Migration Program. The school has a target enrolment and it must continue enrolling students until the target is reached. As a consequence, the school enrols new students throughout the term and throughout the year. Students must however be enrolled in a program within 6 months of their date of arrival. This makes student numbers unpredictable. The school has a maximum enrolment of 300 students. This school has 54 equivalent full time staff: 2 Principal class, 40 teachers and 12 Education Support staff. Our students do not participate in the NAPLAN assessment as they are within one year having arrived in Auatralia and are in the early stages of their English language learning. Instead the school records English Language Entry and Exit levels of all students against the ESL Companion to the English VELS. This data is collected each term by the DEECD.
