Portarlington Primary School is a caring coastal community school with approminately 150 students. There is very positive tone in the school and a clear focus on purposeful teaching and the expectation that every student is actively engaged in their own learning. There is a strong emphasis on academic learning and the early acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills using the Early Years literacy and numeracy framework with Reading Recovery for the lowest 20% of students in grade one. The school programs maximise the potential of all students. Student assessment and data collection form the basis of teacher planning. School classrooms are well resourced with computers, interactive whiteboards in all rooms and a bank of Netbooks. There are specialist teachers in art, music, Information Communication Technology, LOTE Indonesian and Physical Education. The school has 14 equivalent full-time staff: 1 Principal class, 10 teachers and 3 Education Support staff. At Portarlington Primary School there is a strong partnership between staff, community and parents with high parent participation rates in classrooms, school council, excursions, the Monthly Market and student conferences. The school uses Restorative Practices and the You Can Do It program to support the thorough teaching of values and problem solving strategies for all students.
