St Mary's Primary School, Dandenong, is a medium-sized school situated south-east of Melbourne and has approximately 290 students. St Mary's school was established in 1912 and has always had a strong tradition of embracing multicultural richness and respecting and appreciating the diversity of thecommunity. Currently 82% of the families come from a non-English speaking background. St Mary's has modern and recently refurbished school buildings. In 2010 St Mary's received $2.5 million in government grants which enabled a refurbishment of the school library to include a computer lab and interactive teaching space. With the grants a state of the art auditorium was also built equipped with sound lighting and audio visuals. This new space is used for whole school gatherings, special events and physical education classes. Also included in this building project was the erection of a new junior playground with amphitheatre and oral language centre. This initiative has bought the learning space into the outdoors with multiple teaching and learning activities taking place in this area. St Mary's Primary School has extensive and well developed school grounds. It consists of 12 classrooms, 2 computer labs, library, auditorium, outdoor ampitheatre, outdoor oral language centre, a junior and senior adventure playground, a sythenetic covered oval, 2 large surfaced playing areas, administration buildings, community hall and tennis courts. St Mary's provide a broad, integrated curriculum, relevant to individual needs that prepares the students to meet the challenges of the future. A strong emphasis is placed on student wellbeing and the school students at St Mary's are happy and feel connected to the school and their peers, and morale is high. St Mary's offers specialist classes in the following areas: Library, Italian, Performing Arts, Physical Education and Information Technology.
