Fitzroy Community School is a school that feels like a family. It does not operate in a normal school space and does not have the normal school relationships between small people and big people. FCS strives to create young people who care about each other, feel valued, and who have the confidence to enact change. A mantra of the school is 'What have you done today to make the school a better place?' FCS believes that to build confident young people, a community must be small enough to allow personal relationships and interactions to occur regularly between all members. It is a daily flow of personal, meaningful interactions that show the child again and again that they are a person, that they have a place and belong and that they are individually known and valued by all members of the community. FCS has a strong academic tradition as well as a broad extracurricular program - outings, camps, concerts, plays, movies, interschool sport and other outdoor activities are part of the experience of all students. The school was founded on the belief that success in life, however it is measured, comes to those who have confidence and good interpersonal communication skills, and the structure of the school and the school day aims to nurture these.
