Merri Creek Primary School, established in 1891 is situated on the banks of Merri Creek in Fitzroy North an inner urban Melbourne suburb. The school has an enrolment of 309 students with future enrolments expected to reach 350. In 2010 there are 15 classes of students who learn in predominantly composite classes. The school has 23.3 equivalent full time staff: 17.9 teachers, 3.4 Education Support Staff and 2 Principal Class staff and is well recognised for its high academic achievements in English and Maths, outstanding music and visual art programs, attractive playground and commitment to student wellbeing. The school values creativity in all areas, acceptance of others, the taking of responsibility for one's own learning and sustained effort . The school aims to assist students to achieve personal success as life long learners and to develop a sense of belonging in order to participate positively in our ever changing society. It provides a broad range of programs to develop the whole child, including developmental curriculum, environmental sustainability and health and physical education. Active parent participation in the life of the school is a feature and benefits all students. The refurbishment of the double storey building and the art room completed at the end of 2010 will be further enhanced with the addition of interactive whiteboards in many classrooms in 2011. All classrooms have computers and many have notebooks. The Prep/one classes now have access to decks for outdoor learning, while the 3/4/5/6 students enjoy modernised facilities.
