Woolaning Homeland Christian College is campus of NT Christian Schools Association & strives to be “a Christian community, learning together to live life as God intended, offering hope for the worldâ€. The College is for secondary aged Indigenous students, who board at WHCC during six (by six week) school terms in purpose built ‘Family Group Home’ accommodation. Regular contact between students & home communities is encouraged by both students and staff. The short terms enable students to cope with issues of homesickness, especially early in their time at Woolaning. The midyear break is especially organized to give students valuable time for cultural and family experiences. Regular classes are held on public holidays during term time. While acknowledging the low literacy & numeracy levels of many students commencing secondary education at WHCC as an enormous challenge, we accept that this is the very reason for our existence. Our target student group is those who have ‘fallen between the cracks’, students whose attendance at primary school has often been intermittent. It is expected that many of our students will be pre-literate upon enrolment. Our students designated to be Year 7 & 9 may have had less than 1 or 2 years at school, therefore NAPLAN results reflect their entry point rather than the result of 7 or 9 years of schooling. WHCC uses the ‘Accelerated Literacy’ programme, seeing average student gains of 1.5 years per calendar year in literacy & numeracy. Progress is closely monitored & regularly assessed, with students moving onto higher levels only when they have attained & maintained required standards. VET is provided for students in automotive, construction, horticulture & teacher aide training. In 2010, four students completed the NTCE – the first Woolaning students to achieve this. Student life at WHCC is not just about classroom work. A significant part of student time each week is spent in the Family Group Homes where important skills are learned about living and working..
