Katherine School of the Air is located in the town of Katherine, approximately 315 km south of Darwin and is one of three distance education schools in the Northern Territory. The school broadcasts to children of isolated communities throughout an 800 000 square km 'classroom'. The school caters for isolated primary and middle school students who reside in the top half of the Northern Territory, residents temporarily travelling or based elsewhere. Fee paying students are also catered for. The term 'School of the Air' refers to the old style delivery of lessons via HF radio i.e. 'air waves'. Now the school delivers lessons via satellite, internet and telecommunications technologies. Students enrolled at the school and living in the Northern Territory receive a visit by their teacher each year. Preschool students enrolled as part of a family group are included in these visits. English as a Second Language and special needs students receive additional support visits.
