Norton Summit Primary School is situated in the Adelaide Hills with breathtaking views across the local hills and valleys. A chicken run, vegetable garden, propagation house, butterfly garden and wetlands area are exciting parts of our school grounds. A new hall and music room are under construction. In 2011 an Indigenous food garden will be established. Our school offers an environment in which the academic, social, creative and emotional needs of all students can be identified and catered for through its core values of trust, respect, care and excellence. The school is currently working towards accreditation as a Global Peace School. Part of the philosophy of the Peace School program is to instil sustainable peace building and child rights understandings and practices into the everyday life of the school. We value student participation and have an active Student Representative Council. There is a student-run Environment Club and senior students represent our school at the Hills Sustainability Forum. Gardening Club also operates at lunchtime. Students are encouraged to establish clubs for areas of interest. Computer clubs operate at lunchtime twice a week. 'Program Achieve' underpins the eight curriculum areas with a strong focus on the skills of confidence, organisation, getting along, persistence and resilience. The current class confguration is four classes with German as a second language. An Oktoberfest celebration is held on alternate years. We have a strong focus on sustainable education, numeracy and literacy, as well as physical education and music. Students also participate in Pedal Prix, Festival of Music, KESAB and debating. Our more experienced debating team ranked in the top 10 for South Australia in 2010. We also cater for students with high intellectual potential (SHIP). All classes are equipped with interactive whiteboards. Out of school hours care operates from 3:20 - 6:00 daily.
