Wattle Glen Primary School is situated in the leafy semi-rural environment of Wattle Glen, approximately 30 kilometres, north east of Melbourne. The school has had a dramatic increase in enrolments over the last 12 months. In 2011, Prep enrolments rose by 71%. 2012 will see an even higher Prep enrolment number. The school ended 2010 with 32 students and will begin 2012 with at least 60 students. The school offers a comprehensive curriculum based on the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). There is a strong emphasis placed on Literacy and Numeracy as the foundations of effective learning, with Communication, Thinking, Design, Creativity, Technology and ICT the focus of the Interdisciplinary Learning Strand. In 2011, WGPS also implemented the highly accredited Spalding Literacy Program, with all staff trained in the program. Spalding provides every child, at every level, explicit teaching of the English language in a multi-sensory program. Specialist programs are provided for Visual Arts, Library, Physical Education and Performing Arts. Excellent ICT resources are provided across the school with Year 2-6 student being provided with individual laptops. Teachers are incorporating new technologies into their teaching practice and have been well supported with professional learning and appropriate software. The school strongly values the partnership between home and school and is committed to all children successfully completing their primary school years. The school together with its community has undertaken major work to improve the building and grounds. In particular they have attempted to develop a more welcoming environment that stimulates learning. An extensive vegetable garden and chook pen have all been developed with student participation.
