The Armidale Waldorf School is situated in the university city of Armidale in the northern tablelands of New South Wales. The school was established 25 years ago with a small Kindergarten class in a converted art gallery. Enrolments have now grown to over 130 students from Kindergarten to Year 8 in architect designed classrooms that harmonise with the beautiful bushland setting. Many people have re-located to Armidale in order to send their children to this school. Steiner education is a unique system of teaching children based on Rudolf Steiner's wisdom of child development. Whilst fulfilling NSW Board of Studies outcomes, it concurrently gives the students a truly rounded and holistic education by teaching academic subjects through the medium of creativity. Healthy, enthusiastic students go on regular bushwalks and adventurous camps, garden and cook from the school's extensive organic, biodynamic garden, work assiduously to produce challenging craft projects, and hold fund-raisers for overseas orphanages and local wildlife carers. Specialist teachers deliver French language and culture, music, art, drama, Bothmer gymnastics and an extensive violin program throughout the grades. The school's record for sustainability is outstanding, having classrooms with solar in-floor slab heating and large north-facing double glazed windows, 30 solar panels for electricity production, nil to low chemical use in cleaning and paint products, rainwater catchment for potable water, a reed bed waste-management system and a wild-life corridor through the school grounds. This year we will enjoy the completion of our BER grant library, built as much as possible using sustainable practices. All students have successfully made the transition to government, Catholic or independent high-schools, and a frequently made comment is the ease with which they are able to understand higher level subjects through their ability to picture information.
