Mackellar Primary School, situated in Delahey, has a current enrolment of 629 students with 73.6% of students coming from homes with a language background other than English (LBOTE). The school is in transition from being a very large primary school to a medium size school. A Leadership Team consisting of three members of the Principal Class and 5 Leading teachers provides guidance for 37.4 equivalent fulltime teaching staff and 21.48 Education Support Officers. Grades are arranged in straight Preps and composite grades for years 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6. With the introduction of the Western Metropolitan Blueprint staff have embraced ongoing professional learning and school based coaching to continue to build and refine teacher capacity. The funding provided by the Commonwealth National Partnership Smarter Schools program's schools is assisting the school to further support student learning with a particular focus in literacy and numeracy through the employment of consultants, purchase of resources and professional learning for all staff. The whole school has strong foundations in inquiry learning, which provides the students with enriched learning experiences and addresses the importance of student growth in personal and social learning. In November 2010, the grade 5/6 students took occupancy of our new BER learning centre facility. In 2011 students and grade 5/6 staff will undertake an inquiry into best practice in the use of an open learning space.
