Assumption College is a Marist Brothers school with a long and distinguished record of providing Catholic co-education-both day and boarding. The Marist Brothers came to Kilmore in 1893 to meet the educational needs of boys in the local district. Then, to meet the needs of isolated families in Northern Victoria and Southern NSW, it was predominantly a boy's boarding school and remained so until the 1970s. The townships surrounding the Kilmore district have become largely commuter towns over the last 25 years and the rapidly growing population has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of day students attending the College. The Marist Brothers made a decision in 1972 to enrol girls as day students in Year 11 and 12, and in 1986 the College became fully co-educational. In 1995 co-education was extended to the boarding house and today the College provides Catholic education for over 1,000 students of whom approximately 130 are boarders.
