SHC is a Catholic, K to 10, Co-educational College located in the Hobart suburb of New Town. The population is about 1,100 spread across a four-stream secondary campus which is located with a two-stream primary campus, while a second single-stream primary campus is located in the neighbouring suburb of Lenah Valley. The school, established in 1888, is governed by the Sisters of St Joseph. It has a strong allegiance to the charism and vision of the Sisters of St Joseph, and draws its inspiration and values from the traditions of Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods. A lived experience of Gospel values is found in prayerful community celebrations, practical outreach to the poor or marginalized, positive and supportive relationships, challenges to strive for excellence and self discipline and respect for differing beliefs, cultures and capabilities. The college provides many opportunities for extra-curricular pursuits in spiritual, creative, sporting, outdoor and academic areas. Optional after school tutoring is provided regularly. There are many African and humanitarian-entrant students enrolled and they are positively integrated into the school community through well-structured pastoral and academic support. A whole-school literacy program caters for all levels of achievement.
