Girton strives for excellence in academic and co-academic areas of education in a caring Christian environment. A Preparatory to Year 12 co-educational school, Girton emphasises the importance of a well-rounded education where Values, personal and social development of students are as important as academic achievement. The curriculum is geared for university entry, but the School is non-selective in its intake. The 'pillars' of a Girton education include a strong pastoral care system, wide involvement in sport, music, drama, public speaking, creative arts, outdoor camps, technical and community service and leadership programmes. Students study foreign languages to Year Ten at least. The School is liberal Christian in philosophy and the Gospels form a strong ethical guide. The range of sports and music programmes is extensive. Girton excels nationally in Volleyball and Tournament of Minds; it dominates or is highly competitive in many other sports and competitions regionally. Over 90% of its students typically attend universities after Year 12 with the University of Melbourne the most favoured destination.
