Richmond Primary School, established in 1898, is historically a small school but recently has experienced steady growth. The school is an exciting mix of students from different cultures, religions, abilities and interests with a high proportion of students with a language other than English from more than 20 cultural backgrounds. Special programs include a New Arrivals Program and a Communication Class supporting language development for eligible students. The school performs positively in academic, cultural and sporting achievements. It emphasises success-oriented classrooms, student participation, and 'hands on learning'. A consistent approach to the teaching of genre and phonological awareness ensures explicit teaching of literacy across all learning areas. Values of learning, caring, safety and friendliness are taught, reinforced and acknowledged through collaboration between staff, parents and community. A school counsellor supports social skills programs including a Student Council. Specialist curriculum includes physical education, dance and multimedia. Extra-curricular programs include instrumental music, Taiko drums, choir and a vibrant sports program organised by parent volunteers.
