St John's Catholic Primary School, Walkerston, is situated in North Queensland, 17km outside of Mackay in the Pioneer Valley. Families attending the school come from a variety of work backgrounds including, cane and cattle farming, professional, local business and industry and mining sectors. As the population increases in Walkerston and surrounds, St John's enrolments are growing from a small single stream to a double stream school. Currently enrolment is 220 students. The implementation of a major building plan will provide extensive facilities for 350 students. The school's mission is based on core Gospel values and is committed to the education of the whole child with each student being challenged to reach their full potential spiritually, academically, culturally, physically, socially and emotionally. The school provides programs for academic, sporting, the arts and public speaking achievement through the school's employment of specialist teachers in physical education and the arts and the significant skills of staff. Students are provided with opportunities to participate in appropriate local and regional academic, cultural and sporting competitions. The students' wellbeing is catered for with access to counsellors and curriculum specific whole school programs. The parents and wider community are involved with regular school based programs for literacy, numeracy, extra curricula sporting, physical activities and the arts.
