Cobar Public School is a country school with a population of 321 students. Approximately 33% of the school population is identified as having Aboriginal heritage. The school comprises 8 different nationalities. The school is supported by the Country Area Program (CAP), NORTA NORTA and National Partnership Low SES funding. These programs provide significant funds toward the development of learning programs and staff professional learning activities which influence improvements in student learning outcomes. The school has parental support through the Parents and Citizens Association and the Cobar Aboriginal Education Consultative Group. The school has a long term staff with six staff members on current maternity leave. Over half the teaching staff is employed on a temporary basis. Four teachers are New Scheme Teachers. The executive structure of the school comprises one non-teaching Principal and three teaching Assistant Principals. The school promotes citizenship and taking responsibility for one’s own actions, through its strong anti-bullying, discipline and student leadership programs. Students can articulate and explain our shared expectations of Have Fun, Be Good, Learn Lots. School culture, whilst incorporating a pastoral care style ethic, is focused on academic progress rather than student welfare issues. There is a highly functional LST meeting weekly and through which all student welfare issues are addressed. Gold Team will in 2012 comprise of 7 classes, 3 ES1 and 4 S1. Teachers are highly motivated and children are engaged in their learning. Since our involvement as a pilot program school in 2008, ES1 begin each year with Best Start assessment. CPS could see the value and application possibilities and in 2011 Best Start is embedded practice in our transition to school programs.
