Sturt Street Community School reopened in 2004 as an integrated Birth to Year 3 site to meet the demand for services in the Adelaide CBD. After community consultation the school is now extending to Year 7. The school is unique, innovative and promotes early intervention and seamless transition to each sector of schooling. Families representing the diverse cultural and socio-economic groups commute from 50 suburbs. The school is accredited to deliver English language programs for international students. Children from Aboriginal Pathways housing are supported by an Aboriginal Education Officer who works with staff to lead Aboriginal curriculum projects. Combined with a rigorous approach to the acquisition of fundamental skills such as literacy and numeracy, the curriculum recognises the importance of play-based learning. The arts program has a community focus.The world- renowned 'Patch Theatre Company' conducts its research and play development in conjunction with school staff and children, and local artists engage students in projects. Well-being, nutrition and activity are integral to learning. Health services onsite provide additional support to the community.
