Palmerston East State School is located in a rural area known as East Palmerston and is the hub of this small community. Local community groups use the facilities; community members use the grounds during weekends and over school breaks. The school also provides a playgroup for young children in our community. The school has been established for 70 years and serves a stable, farming community. A unique feature of our school is its tropical rainforest setting. The nearest town is Innisfail, which is approximately 26km from the school. The school has an active Parents and Citizens Association. The number of students at our school fluctuates between 15 and 30 students. In the 2010 Teaching and Learning audit, our school received 2 outstandings, 4 highs and 2 mediums - an exceptionally good set of results. These results reflect the excellent academic programs available to the students and reflect the excellent achievements of students. During the past three years, students' NAPLAN results have been within and above the National Benchmark. We pride ourselves on our ability to cater for each student's individual need by having students work in small groups throughout the day and receive their own individual programs. Each Wednesday, after school, the students are involved in the 'Enviro' club. The students have created a vegetable garden, a greenhouse, a fruit orchard, a frog pond, a memorial garden, a butterfly garden, a rainforest walk and their latest project was a Bush Tucker Garden. To support their projects, they erected a fruit stall at the front of the school and use funds raised to maintain and establish various old and new projects throughout the school. This group has received awards from Landcare and has won the Reef Guardian 'Ripples of Change' award. Each year they participate in various sporting carnivals and have won many of these carnivals.
