Araluen Primary School provides a caring and challenging learning environment to equip children with the skills necessary to become valued, effective and productive members of their community. One of three primary schools close to the centre of town, we have earned a reputation as a welcoming, friendly community school. The school’s mission statement is ‘growing as we learn.’ We have adopted ‘not too big, not too small, but just right’ as a guiding principle to underpin the school’s culture. All 163 students are known by name by all teachers and all staff. At Araluen we value cooperation, resilience, organisation, persistence, confidence, tolerance, honesty and respect. We continually assess students to guide our teaching. At an interview in March, Individual Learning Improvement Plans are developed for every child to support individual learning. We report twice yearly using the DEECD prescribed reporting format. All rooms are equipped with Interactive White boards. These complement our emphasis on improved Literacy and Numeracy and provide great opportunity to develop the students’ ICT skills and thinking skills. We have maintained an aging building in an acceptable state with minor and cosmetic works. We have almost completed construction of our $2.5 million building project of 6 new classrooms and shared learning spaces.
