Northam Primary is one of three public primary schools in the town of Northam, 100kms east of Perth. The two storey design and limited playground presents challenges for some educational activities. Nearby is an offsite kindergarten. The student population of 389 across kindergarten to year 7 has 10% indigenous students and 5% from eight other nationalities. This population is drawn from rural localities and the townsite. The school is local intake and only students within the boundary may be admitted. The demographic profile of Northam gives an enrolment with a wide socio-economic range. Teaching staff consists of graduate and experienced teachers who use the WA Curriculum Framework to develop and implement their teaching and learning programs. The school provides for the inclusion of students with disabilities into mainstream classes. There are special programs in music, instrumental tuition, and academic extension. We focus on achieving full potential, quality relationships, a safe and inclusive learning environment, self-discipline, and the recognition of rights and responsibilities of all. Essential to this focus is the whole school approach to explicitly teach social skills.
