Cawarral State School draws students from the small rural communities surrounding Cawarral and is centred approximately 20 km East of Rockhampton in a triangle with Emu Park and Yeppoon. Cawarral is a lifestyle choice with most families working in the nearby towns and on small holdings. Cawarral is the quintessential good school with respectful students and dedicated staff and parents. A new Resource Centre was constructed in 2011 which houses a Science Centre as well as multi-media resources. The school has a Mid-High rating in ABS IRSED statistics. Approximately 120 students are enrolled in multi-age P-7 classes. Class sizes are lower in the P-3 classes with an average of 20. Attendance is high >93% and increasing each year. All KLAs are taught at Cawarral with a strong focus on English, Mathematics and Science. NAPLAN data indicates that Numeracy is strong in the school and Literacy is improving. Our Year 7 students’ performance in NAPLAN is exemplary and they exit the school well prepared for their secondary education with between 40% and 50% of students in the upper two bands of performance in Reading, Writing and Numeracy. THRASS was introduced in 2012 as a strategy to increase student outcomes in Literacy. Specialist Teachers provide PE, Music and support programmes. Intervention, Learning Support and Extension programmes are provided to cater for students with Special Needs. Gifted students are identified and challenged in through G & T activities within the school and cluster of schools. In 2011 students participated in local Maths challenges; Tournament of Minds locally and at a State level; and in enrichment programmes offered by local high schools. Japanese is the language taught and the school hosts a Japanese Expo each year. Instrumental Music (Strings) is also offered. Technology is embedded in the curriculum and all classrooms utilise Interactive Whiteboards with designated laptops and all teachers have a separate laptop.
