Glen Forrest Primary School shares with parents in facilitating the academic,cultural, creative, social, physical and attitudinal growth of the children. The school was founded in 1891 and is the centre of a thriving residential area - which is a very cohesive community. The school has an Art Specialist, Music Specialist, Physical Education Specialist and Instrumental Music is taught. Bahasa Indonesian is taught for Years 3 to 7 for one hour per week. During the year students participate in both District and School organised programs aimed at catering for the needs of academically talented students, these include Primary Academic Extension (both within and outside of school)plus Spelling and Science District Competitions. Glen Forrest Primary adopts a whole school approach to children with learning difficulties and, in partnership with parents, plans for their specific needs. The P&C Association is strong, raising funds for a variety of resources for the students. Students are also supported by a School Psychologist and a Chaplain. The school choir, directed by a parent, is popular among the students and has performed in public, both at the School Fete and the Darlington Arts Festival as well as at school assemblies. When the new buildings are complete (end of 2010) students will have access to a Kitchen and Science Laboratory. Interactive whiteboards will also be added to some classrooms. The school has a policy of supporting the local community. This is reflected in its murals in shops, tree planting activities, sponsorship of the school by local businesses, participation in the annual Carols by Candlelight, loan and hiring of its facilities to many groups and providing a comprehensive recycling service to the local area. The school staff are very experienced and have been at the school ranging from one to twenty plus years. They have developed a sense of community and commitment to the school and the students.
