Surat State School has provided a positive educational experience to the students of Surat since 1874, with the Secondary Department available for learning to Year 10 from 1963, and Preschool classes in the Early Learning Building from 1976. Surat historically has strong links to the Cobb and Co enterprise as the starting point for the very last scheduled Cobb and Co service to operate in Australia on 14 August 1924. Student learning in the traditional Key Learning Areas is fostered through small class sizes and strong intervention strategies. The school has a group of students who engage in the P.C.A.P. Instrumental Music Programme, and perform at community functions and in District events. The students participate in community events and celebrate traditional days such as Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day, Easter and ANZAC Day with the community. Our School Chaplain provides support, encouragement and programmes for students. The school is a consistent winner in The Keep Australia Beautiful (QLD) Schools Green and Healthy awards for its performance in environmental education programmes. It is currently an Earth Smart Science School, with a range of initiatives including aquaponics gardens and an increasing use of solar energy in its energy strategy. The school has a committed Parents and Citizens group providing the school with a wide range of support and resource allocations. The school operates with an outstanding student / computer ratio better than 1:2 for the whole school. All primary classes engage with an electronic whiteboard to enhance learning. Grounds and buildings are maintained to an extremely high standard.
