Avonvale Primary School opened in 1954. A primary school with 140 students, it has 45% indigenous enrolment and the Noongar language is taught. The school has high transience, impacting on student attendance and achievement. Avonvale Primary School is situated in Northam, east of Perth. Housing is mainly government and the school has low socio-economic index. Additional funding comes from the Commonwealth Literacy and Numeracy Program and the Getting it Right Literacy and Numeracy Program. Parent support is limited however; a core P & C group operates school canteen and School Council. A school and community agreement has improved relationships with families. A Breakfast Club runs to improve attendance and provides a pastoral care meeting place and support for students. The school has an innovative 'Bravo Arvo' program, allowing students to select highly engaging experiences with a cross- curricula focus. The school supports an Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) coordinator. With support from the Community Development Foundation and federal government funding, a new community building and netball and basketball courts, have increased community involvement.
