South Hedland PS was the first primary school established in South Hedland. Student numbers are relatively stable with 270 students in K-7. Over the years there has been a change in the student population with 85% of students in 2009 being Aboriginal.School leadership is shared & cohesive. The leadership team is complemented by young, enthusiastic teaching staff who are ably supported by experienced, long serving support staff. The school is strengthened by its strong collegial atmosphere. The school is responsive to changing needs and has implemented many innovative programs over the years to target the specific needs of the students and the school community. Priorities include a focus on improving attendance as well as improving literacy & numeracy achievement. Specialist programs offered to students include LOTE-Nyangumarta, Visual Art, Physical Education and Library. A strong pastoral care program is embedded within the school practice and the school has achieved much success through a whole school approach to behaviour management. The school is fortunate in being able to offer the latest technology to students with interactive whiteboards installed in all teaching areas.
