Charlton State School was established in 1898. It provides an attractive and well organised physical environment with abundant space and resources for students to learn. It is a multi-age coeducational state school situated 6 kilometres west of Toowoomba on the busy Warrego Highway. The school's enrolment is approximately 40 students in 2 classes: an Early Childhood classroom with Prep, Years 1, 2 and 3 students and a middle schooling classroom with Years 4, 5, 6 and 7 students. Our curriculum focuses on explicit teaching and development of literacy and numeracy. Learned knowledge and skills in these areas are then practised and demonstrated through practical and purposeful investigations covering essential understandings in the other syllabus areas. Progress is monitored and mapped for each student and individual learning plans are designed to optimise the opportunities for all learners. Learning spaces and organisation of staff allow for a variety of student groupings to suit students' particular needs and maximise learning. Values education including social learning and skilling is considered one of the school's key learning areas and essential for optimising success in our academic education program. The school's mission is "Valuing the individual, celebrating participation and success in learning" which is backed up by the core values of: Safety, Responsibility, Respect and Participation. Many opportunities are taken to communicate and celebrate improvements and success in both academic and social learning. The school has a structured School Responsible Behaviour Plan for students that provides clear expectations and consequences for levels of individual student behaviour and focuses primarily on positive behaviours. Physical activity and creativity are valued and form part of daily programming. Extra-curricular opportunities in sport, music and the dramatic arts are provided for all children considering their individual talents.
