Tongala Primary School is situated in the rural town of Tongala in northern Victoria in a predominantly dairy farming area. The school caters for approximately 120 students in Prep to Year 6 and strongly believes in providing a safe, friendly, inclusive and respectful learning environment for our students. Students and their families have access to our Pastoral Carer and Primary Welfare Officer so as to ensure the wellbeing and social development of our whole school community is catered for. We also have a strong commitment to school improvement in teaching and learning. We are improving student outcomes with a specific focus on Mathematics and Literacy. Tongala Primary School is part of the Mathematics Specialists in schools project enabling the delivery of high quality Mathematics teaching and learning. We also employ a Literacy Coach to work with teachers and students across the school to ensure continued improvement in Literacy. Digital learning is integrated across the curriculum to enhance teaching and learning and to promote student engagement and motivation. These technologies include Interactive Whiteboards in all teaching spaces, digital cameras, video cameras, Netbook computers and the use of the Ultranet. Tongala Primary School has a Transition Program that support students at all levels of transition. Kinder to Prep transition happens over the whole year ending in term 4 with children visiting the school weekly to take part in activities. At each year level the students work with the next level to build confidence and resilience to ensure a smooth and seamless transition. Our school works closely with the community and supports community events such as ANZAC Day, memorials and special events. Parents are encouraged to be involved in our school and assist in many ways. We have parents assisting us for reading, cooking, environmental studies and a range of other activities. Students regularly visit the Aged Care Centre for board games and reading and ‘Old Mates’ visit students in a mentoring..
