Established in 1916, Wowan State School is situated about eighty kilometres from Rockhampton on the Burnett Highway. Our Early Education classroom is composed of Prep,Year 1 and 2, while the other classrooms are comprised of Yrs 3, 4 and 5 and Yrs 6 and 7 composite classes. Our successful curriculum has a central focus on high levels of literacy and numeracy, with the levels of the remaining syllabuses delivered primarily as integrated units of study based on essential learnings. The distinctive features within this design include knowing and understanding each student to develop optimal techniques to challenge and extend each student in a caring, supportive classroom aad mapping, recording and reporting every student's progress by keeping an individual portfolio including six-monthly standardised reading and spelling tests, writing samples, unit criteria sheets and maths assessment. In addition to this, we include NAPLAN and QCAT tests at appropriate junctures. A comprehensive intervention program has been set up to benefit individual students as required. Parents are encouraged to become actively involved in the school P and C and as volunteers in the classroom.
