Hazelwood North Primary School is set in rural surroundings in the Latrobe Valley, approximately 160 kilometres from Melbourne. Most of the children come from the Hazelwood North area,with a small percentage coming from Churchill, Morwell & Traralgon. Many parents work for the power companies or for industries servicing the power industry. In 2010 there were seven classes, ranging in size from 19 - 25 students. Our school also ran specialist classes in Music, Art & Library. The Stategic Plan Student Learning Priority (2009 - 2012) is "to promote the achievement of high quality educational outcomes for all students with a particular focus on maximising student learning outcomes in literacy and numeracy from years Prep to 6". The school has a strong tradition of community involvement in all areas of the curriculum, as well as an active Parents' Club and School Council. Students have participated in a wide range of sporting activities including: athletics, swimming, football, netball, soccer and cross country. .A wide range of visiting speakers came to the school during 2010. There were visiting performances each term, with the "Musical in a Day" being a highlight. The Family Bush Dance held at the end of the year was a great success. The children from grades 3/4 and 5/6 combined to attend school camp. All grades were involved in numerous excursions throughout the year. Development of our School Hall commenced at the end of the year, and we look forward to the building of our new three-classroom building and art / resource room in 2011.
