Newstead Primary School is located 14 kilometres west of Castlemaine on the Pyrenees Highway in a small township. The current enrolment is 81. Positive relationships are important to the school and in 2008 the school community reviewed our core values and identified the following three values: Respect, Responsibility and Resilience as a way of enhancing relationships and connecting with members of the school community. Student relationships are enhanced by the implementation of the Restorative Practices approach. Newstead Primary School has 5 .8 equivalent full time staff: 1 Principal class, 3.6 teachers and 1.2 Education Support staff. Newstead Primary School has 1 to 1 technology in the senior school and is foccused towards Ultranet implementation. The curriculum is designed to give the students a range of learning opportunities which cater for their individual needs, this includes both intervention and extension programs. Literacy and numeracy are teaching and learning priorities. The school has undertaken several projects to improve and enhance the learning environment including; a junior playground, a modern art and technology building, a sheltered outdoor learning area and an outdoor educational 'classroom'.
