GLOUCESTER Public School provides students with quality educational programs delivered by highly qualified, dedicated teachers. We are recognised for our innovative literacy programs that provide students individualised attention in both small group and class tuition. Our excellent results in aspects of literacy in national tests are evidence of our success. National Partnership funding has allowed us to extend these successful literacy programs into all classes from Kindergarten to Year 6. Kick Start operates in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms. Reading and Writing guided support is given by Student Learning Support Officers (SLSO) led by the classroom teacher. There is a team of Reading SLSOs and a team of Writing SLSOs. Reading teams go to each class's room for a guided reading session each day. Students are grouped by ability. Groups are relatively flexible as the student' needs change. In these sessions students read both new and familiar texts while building on reading strategies learnt in their classrooms. Writing teams support guided and independent writing sessions. These lessons are directed by the classroom teacher as the SLSO team assists. Kick On is the latest school initiative designed by Gloucester Public School staff to support literacy learning across Year 3 to Year 6. The focus for these teams, under the guidance of the classroom teacher, is to guide the students in gaining a deeper understanding of text through group discussion using comprehension strategies. We provide enrichment and extension programs for gifted and talented students through: participation in the stage 2 and stage 3 Talented Writers Program; e-GATS; debating and public speaking opportunities; extension mathematics through video conferencing; ICAS competitions; and a comprehensive music program including school choir and participation in the dance section of Star Struck.
