Smithton Primary draws its population from the town of Smithton and surrounding rural areas. Many of our students travel long distances on the bus in order to attend school. The current school population is approximately 340, with 13 classes Prep to Year 6 and rotational Kindergarten group of 29. A particular challenge for the school is the number of students who have little or no contact with the school or education prior to their Kinder year. The implementation of our Birth to Four Program, Kids Out and About at SPS, begun in 2008, has already impacted positively on the opportunities of our Kinder students. In contrast in 2009 the number of our Prep students achieving expected outcomes is high and trending up in Literacy. The school's performance in value-adding for Years 3 to 5 is trending up in Literacy. Indigenous students at Smithton Primary continue to achieve at a high level when compared with non-Indigenous students. The implementation of the Raising the Bar Closing the Gap Literacy initiative at Smithton Primary and the ongoing commitment to 'Count Me In Too' and Mental Computations in Numeracy should positively impact on continuing gains in Literacy and Numeracy.
