Burke Ward Public School is located in Broken Hill and serves approximately 340 students, including a significant number of Aboriginal students. The school provides a comprehensive curriculum for students from kindergarten to year six and prides itself on its parental support and strong links with the community. The school operates a special education unit drawing students from across the Broken Hill area. Long standing traditions which are valued by the school community include the Fife and Drum Band, the prefect system and formal induction and presentation ceremonies. The school is a participant in the National Partnership for Low Socioeconomic communities.
