Woongarra State School is situated amidst cane fields and small crop holdings, about 8 km from Bundaberg in one direction and 10 km from Coral Coast communities in another. It is a growing school with currently 19 classes including 4 Preps. The current level of growth (approximately 460 students in 2010) has resulted in the establishment of a school management plan. The optimum student population would be 500 students. The school buildings are low-set and all are carpeted and air-conditioned. Woongarra has a specialist Music room, a well-resourced library and a computer laboratory. Instrumental Music is offered in woodwind, strings, brass and percussion. Athletics, swimming and a variety of team sports are offered to all students. Students are supported by a Guidance Officer, a Support Teacher (Literacy and Numeracy), an Inclusion Teacher for children with Special Needs and a School Chaplain. Although the school draws students from a mixture of socio-economic groups, most Woongarra families would identify with middle-class values and aspirations. This is reflected in the high level of parental support and the pride the community takes in being part of the 'Woonie' tradition. Teaching staff are justifiably proud of their commitment to delivering the best possible educational experiences. They have been very successful in engaging with QCAR, planning integrated units of work, creating meaningful assessment tasks and really clarifying what the students need to know and are able to do, then applying standards-based assessment criteria. Information and Communication Technology is an integral part of all classroom programs and Woongarra is very well equipped with computers and multimedia support, including a comprehensive robotics program in Year 7 and interactive whiteboards in most rooms. Students and parents are very clear about expectations for behaviour, wearing school uniform and caring for the school's physical environment, of which we are justifiably proud.
