Holy Spirit is a Catholic co-educational primary school located in the inner city suburb of East Thornbury. It services the eastern part of Thornbury and has an enrolment of 221 students, increasing to 243 in 2011. Holy Spirit School opened its doors in 1953 with Fr John Brace as the Parish Priest and was staffed by the Good Samaritan Sisters. Today Holy Spirit offers an extensive program including a literacy and maths program that targets the needs of individual students. We have six specialist areas and an extensive lunchtime co-curricular program offering students the opportunity to participate in activities such as science, chess, photography, Lego (robotics, mechanisms and gears & levers), cooking, craft, gardening and choir. Student Wellbeing is a high priority at Holy Spirit School, as we believe it is intrinsically linked to student outcomes. The subject coordinators work closely with the welfare coordinator and teachers to identify and support student's strengths and areas of need. To aid us in this work we employ a psychologist and speech pathologist on a part time basis. Each class also has a teaching assistant. In the last twelve months the Building the Education Revolution, together with an earlier grant, has resulted in a school building and facilities that address 21st century education. Audio Visual and ICT facilities and equipment have been upgraded. All children have ready access to a range of technologies. With the upgrading of the hall and the building of two new classrooms, Holy Spirit has been able to respond to increasing enrolments. Now that the building project has been completed focus returns to improvements in the outdoor areas. Working with a landscape architect children's play, garden and activity areas will be developed. Our aim is to maintain strong academic results and to develop resilient students who demonstrate an active faith. To support this we place an emphasis on social justice and on developing leadership skills amongst the children. Overall our vision for the school is..
